I won't give a boring and vain self description; even a Duckduckgo query will likely to tell you more about me than I would (and that's not even using Google – which, interestingly, returns an almost disjunct set of links relative to DDG). Note, however, that I am not a member of "Opel-Freunde Neunburg vorm Wald", and of course I am not on facebook.

A publication list is available from ADS (which is where I used to work). These days checking out the IVOA Document Repository and GAVO's publications page will complete the picture.

I now work at Astronomisches Rechen-Institut in Heidelberg on the GAVO project, an effort to contribute to Virtual Observatory, e.g., through the operation of the GAVO data center and developing the DaCHS multiprotocol server suite.

Before that, I spent quite a few years at the Seminar für Computerlinguistik (you may guess that this could be translated as computational linguistics -- however, I somewhat prefer the term “natural language processing”). Lecture notes for some of the courses I gave there are now available below this primitive landing page; in particular the programming courses may show their age here and there.

And no, although I admit to having cooked up the UNiMUT Schwobifying Proxy, it has absolutely nothing to do with computational linguistics. I did this years before I even dreamt of joining SCL and got involved in serious natural language processing.

I'm not going to tell you what other stuff I'm into without being paid. Suffice it to say it's too much.

For those who are interested in such things, I've studied physics and astrophysics, wrote my diploma thesis on sticky particles in swing-amplified density waves (you can find a published article in A&A 331, 485 (1998)), which tells you how to prove that there's swing amplification going on in spiral galaxies (in case that question becomes fashionable again). My PhD (2000) was on global solutions for modes in Mestel disks. There's a publication on it in A&A 371, 68 (2001), but since the fulltext isn't freely available, you'll probably want to pull it from astro-ph (it's astro-ph/0103091, actually). Courtesy of our university library, straight edgers can also get the entire thesis.

You could also check out a collection of hacks I felt I should put on the net, as well as some hints on running GNU/Linux on a JVC XP731 (my trusty old machine) and running GNU/Linux on a Thinkpad X240 (my new machine).

I also occasionally put up Luakit hints, because luakit is the first web browser I'm actually happy with. Since I've been using the web since, let me see, 1993 (yes, I've used CERN's telnet-based browser), that's saying something.

I get oodles of spam anyway, so there's no harm giving my e-mail address here: msdemlei@ari.uni-heidelberg.de

I am also an activist in privacy (so much so that I won't even tell you which organizations I work in). So, do send me encrypted mail. My public key is
